Good morning, graduates, faculty members, and esteemed guests. It is truly an honor to stand before you today and share some thoughts and experiences that have shaped my life. Today, I want to talk to you about the importance of following your passion and finding meaning in your work.

In 2005, I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and it was a wake-up call for me. It made me realize that life is too short to waste it on things that don't truly matter to us. As I faced the possibility of death, I asked myself a question that I want to pose to all of you today: If today were the last day of your life, would you want to do what you are about to do?

For the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself that question. And whenever the answer has been "no" for too many days in a row, I knew I needed to change something. Following your passion means having the courage to listen to your heart and intuition. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice.

When I dropped out of college, I didn't have a clear plan, but I trusted that following my passion would lead me to where I needed to be. I started Apple in my parents' garage, and although we faced numerous challenges along the way, we persevered because we believed in what we were doing. Don't be afraid to take risks and trust that the dots will connect in the future.

The road to success is never a straight line. It is filled with setbacks, failures, and doubts. But remember that the greatest artists, scientists, and entrepreneurs have all had their fair share of failures. The key is to learn from them, embrace them, and use them as stepping stones to reach new heights.

Finally, I want to leave you with one last piece of advice. Stay hungry, stay foolish. Never settle for mediocrity or what others deem as success. Keep searching for new ways to innovate and make a difference. And most importantly, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed faculty members, and graduates, it is an honor to be here today and share with you some of the lessons I have learned throughout my life. Today, I want to talk about the importance of embracing failure and finding the strength to persevere.

When I was in my early 30s, I was fired from the company I co-founded, Apple. It was a devastating blow, and I felt like a public failure. But looking back, getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have happened to me. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life and allowed me to start over with a beginner's mind.

Failure can be a harsh teacher, but it is also a necessary one. It forces us to reevaluate our approach, learn from our mistakes, and grow stronger. Don't be afraid to fail. In fact, embrace it. Failure is not the opposite of success; it is a stepping stone on the path to success.

During my time away from Apple, I founded a company called NeXT and also acquired Pixar Animation Studios. These experiences taught me the value of perseverance and the importance of surrounding myself with people who shared my vision and passion. Success is not achieved alone; it is a collective effort.

In 1997, Apple acquired NeXT, and I returned to the company that I had co-founded. Together, we embarked on a journey to revolutionize the tech industry once again. This time, our focus was on simplicity and innovation. We introduced products like the iPod, iPhone, and iPad, which have had a profound impact on the world.

As you embark on your own journeys, remember that success is not measured by wealth or fame. It is measured by the impact you have on others and the difference you make in the world. Find something that you are passionate about and pursue it relentlessly. And when you encounter obstacles, remember that failure is not the end; it is just the beginning of a new chapter.
