英文读后感 篇一

Title: "To Kill a Mockingbird: A Timeless Tale of Innocence and Injustice"

Introduction:

"To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee is a classic American novel that explores themes of innocence, injustice, and the power of empathy. Set in the 1930s in the fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama, the story is narrated by Scout Finch, a young girl who learns valuable life lessons from her father, Atticus Finch, and experiences the harsh realities of racial inequality.

Summary:

The novel centers around the trial of Tom Robinson, a black man accused of raping a white woman. Through Scout's eyes, we witness the prejudice and racism prevalent in society at that time. Atticus Finch, a morally upright lawyer, defends Tom despite knowing the inherent biases of the jury and the town. As the trial progresses, the innocence of Scout and her brother Jem is shattered as they witness the injustice inflicted upon Tom and the courage of their father in fighting for what is right.

Personal Reflection:

"To Kill a Mockingbird" left a profound impact on me. The novel beautifully captures the essence of childhood innocence and the harsh realities of the world. Through Scout's perspective, we see the gradual loss of innocence as she realizes the prejudice and racism deeply ingrained in society. This coming-of-age theme resonates with readers of all ages and reminds us of the importance of empathy and understanding.

Atticus Finch is a moral compass throughout the novel, teaching his children valuable lessons about equality, compassion, and justice. His unwavering belief in the power of empathy is a testament to the strength of his character. Atticus's defense of Tom Robinson, despite the odds stacked against him, is a powerful reminder of the need to fight for what is right, even in the face of adversity.

The novel also sheds light on the destructive nature of prejudice and the negative impact it has on individuals and communities. Lee's portrayal of the town of Maycomb exposes the deep-rooted racism that not only affects the lives of black individuals but also perpetuates ignorance and intolerance among the white population. This serves as a stark reminder of the importance of challenging societal norms and prejudices.

Conclusion:

"To Kill a Mockingbird" is a timeless masterpiece that continues to resonate with readers today. Its exploration of innocence, injustice, and the power of empathy makes it a thought-provoking and emotionally impactful read. Through Scout's eyes, we witness the complexities of human nature and the importance of standing up against injustice. This novel serves as a powerful reminder that even in the face of adversity, it is our duty to fight for what is right and strive for a more just and compassionate society.

Title: "The Great Gatsby: A Glimpse into the Illusions of the American Dream"

Introduction:

"The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a classic novel that delves into the themes of wealth, love, and the illusion of the American Dream. Set in the 1920s, the story follows Jay Gatsby, a mysterious millionaire, and his pursuit of Daisy Buchanan, a married woman with whom he had a romantic past. Through the eyes of narrator Nick Carraway, we are immersed in the opulence and decadence of the Jazz Age while also witnessing the emptiness and moral decay that lie beneath the surface.

Summary:

"The Great Gatsby" paints a vivid picture of the Roaring Twenties, where wealth and materialism reigned supreme. Jay Gatsby, a self-made millionaire, throws extravagant parties in the hopes of attracting Daisy's attention and winning her back. However, as the story unfolds, we come to realize that behind the glitz and glamour, Gatsby's life is built on illusions and unattainable dreams.

Personal Reflection:

"The Great Gatsby" left a lasting impression on me. Fitzgerald's portrayal of the American Dream as an unattainable illusion is both captivating and heartbreaking. Gatsby's relentless pursuit of wealth and social status is a reflection of the superficiality and emptiness that often accompany the desire for material success. Despite his vast fortune, Gatsby remains a lonely and tragic figure, ultimately undone by his own illusions and the corrupt values of the society he aspires to be a part of.

Through the character of Nick Carraway, Fitzgerald provides a critical lens through which to view the extravagance and moral decline of the Jazz Age. Nick serves as a moral compass, observing the decadence and shallowness of the upper class while also recognizing the emptiness that lies beneath their fa?ade. His narrative voice adds depth and complexity to the story, allowing readers to see beyond the surface and question the true nature of the American Dream.

"The Great Gatsby" also explores themes of love, betrayal, and the consequences of unfulfilled desires. The tragic love story between Gatsby and Daisy highlights the destructive power of longing for something that can never be fully realized. Their relationship serves as a cautionary tale, reminding us of the dangers of placing our happiness and sense of self-worth in the hands of others.

Conclusion:

"The Great Gatsby" is a timeless novel that continues to resonate with readers today. Fitzgerald's exploration of wealth, love, and the illusion of the American Dream offers a stark critique of the materialistic and superficial values that permeate society. Through Gatsby's tragic story, we are reminded of the importance of finding fulfillment and meaning beyond material wealth and social status. This novel serves as a poignant reminder that the pursuit of the American Dream can often lead to disillusionment and emptiness, urging us to reevaluate our own values and aspirations.

英文读后感 篇四

I read the Chinese version of “Camille” a few years ago. At that time I was deeply moved by the main character Marguerite Gautier. “Camille” or “The Lady of the Camellias” by Alexandre Dumas, fils, is the story of Marguerite Gautier, a young courtesan, or kept woman, in Paris in the mid 1800's, and how she falls in love with a young man, Armand Duval, and then tries to escape from her questionable past. Unfortunately, it comes back to haunt her and she ends up returning to that life and dies painfully and alone, but with the knowledge that she was a noble woman at heart. When I first began to read the book, I did not care for Marguerite or her attitude or lifestyle, but as I got further into the narrative, I realized that her saucy attitude was a front to cover the lonely woman that she really was. She felt used, abused and unloved, until the gentle Armand Duval came into her life and showed her that he loved her as a person and not for what she could do for him.

It must have taken great courage for Marguerite to leave the life she had lived for so long, knowing all along that it was probably too good to be true and would not last indefinitely. And it also showed that Marguerite really loved Armand Duval for she could even change herself for him.

However, happiness didn’t last for long. When M. Duval, Armand's father, came to her, pleading for her to leave Armand to save both Armand's reputation and that of his younger innocent sister, Marguerite saw a way to become pure of heart, if not in body. She felt that it was her duty, because she loved Armand so much, to do this even though it meant giving up her own happiness and hurting Armand temporarily. She reluctantly returned to her former life, knowing that some day Armand would forgive her. Sadly, she died in debt and basically alone, except for her one female friend, Julie Duprat, who helped her during her illness. She had her journal sent to Armand after her death, explaining why she had made the choices she had. I think Dumas's last few lines about Marguerite being the exception, not the rule were quite true, and I also agreed with his view that while her lifestyle could not be condoned, we as a society assume that all of these type of women are cold and heartless, while this may not always be the case.

A person can make the wrong choices in life when they are young, and try to redeem themselves, but sometimes past situations prevent them from changing their lives, even though they desperately wish to do so. This applies to both men and women in many different types of circumstances: involvement in crime; drug or alcohol abuse; gambling; prostitution; financial problems; poor marriage choices; etc. And this is the fact, which exists in the whole society.

As far as the other characters in the book, I think Marguerite was right in saying that no one truly cared about her, but only wanted something from her, the only exceptions being Armand and Julie Duprat. Of course, the Comte de G. and Comte de N. wanted her body and appearance. The Duke needed to “wake up and smell the coffee” and realize that she could never replace his dead daughter. If he truly cared, he could have helped her leave her lifestyle without “keeping” her himself. And lastly, Prudence was a blood-sucking leech who used Marguerite almost worse than the men. I also think she was jealous of the fact that Marguerite had so much more courage than herself and someone truly loved her.

Last morning, when tiding my bookshelf, I took this book out of the shelf, and a dried flower flew away from the book. It was pale blue, very transparent, with thin fine veins. a dried flower flew away from the book. It was pale blue, very transparent, with thin fine veins. I held it against the morning light and blew on it. The soft breeze carried it away. Camille is just like the camellia, she could never escape from the destiny of withering. But it wasn’t her fault; it’s because of the evil of Capitalism and the hideousness of that society.

Suddenly, I remembered a saying: “Women are like the flowers”。 Those pretty women are like those beautiful flowers; their delicate beauty makes people feel they are the miracle of life. However, even the God envies their beauty. It seems that beautiful women always have tragic endings. As we are normal persons, even we can see the hideousness of humanity that results in their fate of withering, we can at most ask quietly in our hearts: Where have those beautiful flowers gone? Where have they gone?

英文读后感 篇五

She was seduced by a so-called gentleman—Alec, and from then on herlife totally changed from this loss of innocence. People lookeddown on her and respected her no more. Actually she did nothingwrong because before she was seduced she knew nothing of men. Shewas just a girl when she first met that terrible man.Shewas forced by the gossips and the church to blame herself for thisaccident, so she thought she deserved nothing good.

  In order to getrid of the past she decided to go to a distant dairy farm but wasstill saying to herself that she was wrong. Maybe God didn’t agreewith that, because the Lord gave her someone she loved with herwhole heart and life—Angel Chare. Angel popped the question to herbut she refused him without saying why. She said she loved himdeeply and perhaps no one in the world could love him more than shedid but she could not marry him for some unspoken reason. Angelwasn’t satisfied with this vague answer and did his best to winTess. Somehow she agreed and they soon fixed the wedding day. Soonafter their wedding Angel confessed the crime he committed to awoman long time ago and asked for Tess’s forgiveness. Tess was notat all angry and forgave Angel at once;

in fact she was ratherhappy and excited for she also had things to confess.Shesat and told everything to Angel, hoping he would forgive her as hewas forgiven but she was wrong. She was not forgiven, not as shethought she was. The woman pays.WithoutAngel’s love, nothing meant anything to her. The result wasn’timportant now. Tess was arrested for her murder of that so-calledgentleman. Why? She still loved Angel and when he finally went backto her and asked for HER forgiveness, after he regretted what hehad done unfair to Tess, she was desperate. That was too late—Alechad always told Tess that Angel would never come back so he wonTess’s trust. Unluckily Angel did come back and found Tess.!Everything was too late!Tesswas deceived and she lost Angel for the second time! The strengh ofher love was so strong that she had forgotten the differencebetween right and wrong.

Before that she had done nothing wrong butwhen she killed Alec, everything really changed! She became acriminal! How could it be? She was as pure and innocent as the goodwife in the Bible. Her whole character was honest and faithful.Angel figured out at last that a person should be judged not onlyon what he has done but also on what he wanted to do!Tessdidn’t want to be seduced by man and she had no power to defendherself so she lost her innocence and that’s all! Angel also didthe wrong thing and it was even more serious than Tess’s crime butHE was not blamed for it. Why it is always the woman who pays? Whythey are always hurt?

Why was Tess’s girlish purity lost? Why doesthe wrong man take the wrong woman? Why do the bad often ruin thegood? Why is beauty damaged by ugliness? Women are too weak!Thousands of years of history have shown us that women have alwaysbeen treated unfairly!Inold China there was a culture, which didn’t think of women as humanbeings. If you asked one if he was the oldest in his family, hewould probably answer “the oldest one” even if he had some eldersisters. If you asked why then he would say, “Ha, they are notincluded!”Peoplegave birth to many girls in order to have only one boy to keep thefamily name going.

They thought girls had no use for the family. They would be married and go to live with their husbands’ home andbe their wives some day sooner or later. So they were extremelyhard on girls.Girlsshould be hard working, faithful, loyal, intelligent, and virtuousand the most important thing was she must be a maiden! If herhusband was the first man who touched her then she was a good girl,a good wife no matter how she thought. If she wasn’t, then shewould gain a very bad reputation and nobody would dare to go nearher. What about men? People did not care whether he was anexperienced man or not, nor did they care about his character. Theythought man equals power and power equals rights…Nowlet’s not be so bitter. Nowadays women’s situations have becomemuch better. Some are because of the change of society and some arebecause of civilization. Just let those poor painful women likeTESS be just a memory.

英文读后感 篇六

The main character of the novel Crime and Punishment by Feodor Dostoevsky, Raskolnikov, is in reality two totally contradicting personalities. One part of him is the the intellectual. He is cold, unfeeling and inhumane. He exibits tremendous self-will. It is this side that enables him to commit the most terrible crime imaginable - taking another human life. The other part of his personality is warm

And compassionate. This is the side of him that does charitable acts and fights out against the evil in his society.

The confusion in Raskolnikov"s soul is best seen when he tries to help a girl in the street who has been raped and left to the whims of anyone who finds her. Raskolnikov tries to protect her from the evil of the street, then stops himself when he is revulsed by the wickedness of his society. Why did I take it upon myself to interfere? Was it for me to try to help? Let them eat one another alive - what is it to me? At one time Raskolnikov is both caring and concerned and yet he is able to push aside the whole affair by being totally indifferent. The goal of the novel is to make Raskolnikov into one character. Sonya helps bring Raskolnikov back into his emotional, humane side.

Through her suffering, she shows him that it is important to have a love for all humanity and that no person should ever be able to exist like a parasite off of another person. Porifery, the official investigating the crime, acts as the intellectual who shows Roskolnikov that all intellect must be used for the good of mankind.
