在山东，新泰县城中，有个货郎青年。长得好帅，好酷。靠卖些小花布、针线、糖果……等杂货为生。因他是个孤儿，无依无靠，家穷。年龄都二十六、七了，可还是光棍一人。
一天，下乡回来，到屋里一看。桌上热气腾腾，饭菜早做好了。货郎感到纳闷，心想：唉，谁给我做的饭呢？是不是邻居给我做的。就到四邻打听问，结果谁都没有做。
货郎心想；管他是谁做的呢？先吃了再说。
第二天，货郎下乡了，回来后，桌上照样饭菜热气腾腾。货郎更是纳闷，这又是谁给做的呢？他又到四邻去打听，结果还是谁都没有做。
“唉rdquo；这真是奇怪！货郎天天去下乡，回来桌上热气腾腾，饭菜早做好了。这到底是谁给我做的呢？货郎就去问隔壁柳妈，说：柳妈妈你说奇怪不，天天有人给我做饭，我也不知道是谁给我做的？这真是个大怪事？
柳妈妈听了，想了一会说：你先假装下乡，在一边看着，看到底是怎么回事？货郎听了点了点头……
过了一天，货郎把门锁上。挑上担子，假装下乡，在外面转了一圈

货郎听了，更加感激。说：姑娘若不嫌弃，我愿与你喜结连理，白头到老。姑娘含羞点头答应了……
